IAHM Celebrates at Stanley Field Hall in The Field Museum

Aug 22, 2017 Dr Kristina Nelson

The promise of an extraordinary evening awaits those who attend  the 2017 Indo-American Heritage Museum Gala in Stanley Field Hall at the Field Museum, 1400 South Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, L 60605. Doors will open at 6:00 for a cocktail hour featuring a guided exhibition tour followed by dinner at 8:00 pm.   A performance of  Samaagam, a concerto by renowned Indian musicians Ustaad Amjad Ali Khan and his sons Ayaan and Amaan accompanied by musicians from  the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra will be the highlight of the event.

“Beyond Bollywood, Indian Americans Shape the Nation”

The gala coincides with the exhibition Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation augmented by an exhibition about local Indian Americans produced by the Indo-American Heritage Museum.  Expert docents will be present to explain diversity and nuances of the heritage  and contributions of  Indian Americans for gala guests  who tour the exhibition in the Marae Gallery.

Samaagam, explores and blends the DNA of eastern and western musical traditions.  In Sanskrit samaagam means confluence or flowing together.  Thus it and serves as a metaphor for the Indian American diaspora  in the US and reflects the content of the Beyond Bollywood exhibition.  A silent auction will feature appealing options for sports fans and patrons of the arts.

Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation was created by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. The exhibition is co-presented in Chicago by The Field Museum and the Indo-American Heritage Museum. This exhibition is generously supported by The Chicago Community Trust.

Funds raised by the Gala will help support the Indo-American Heritage Museum,  the first institution of its kind in the country, IAHM  is a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve the history of Indian Americans, to foster understanding of their diversity and culture, and to showcase their contributions to the fabric of American life. IAHM conducts educational outreach programs in the Devon ethnic neighborhood and tells the Indian immigrant story at  www.iahmuseum.org.   The Gala is supported by generous individual donors, Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra,  and Mandala Arts.
